They may be Expendable but Stallone and his crew are proving to be indispensable for action movie fans!!! Read our Expendables 3 review to find out why!!!
The Expendables are back in
their biggest adventure yet. What
started as a novelty project featuring everyone’s favourite 80s action heroes
has really turned into a pretty worthwhile franchise now.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s
still all loud explosions with people dying left, right and center but the
explosions are bigger, the team is now established and it’s just kinda cool watching
these guys kicking ass. It’s more fun
going in knowing what to expect, you expect an Expendables movie.
The movie starts with a
pretty grand spectacle as Stallone and team free Snipes from a moving armored
train. It’s pretty awesome seeing
Stallone and Snipes reunited all these years after the amazing Demolition Man (a
must watch film for any action fan).
Crazy as it is, the over the top intro is just an appetizer for what’s
to come.
Turns out a former Expendable
turned bad and long thought dead is still alive and kicking. This is where the real mission starts.
Church, former CIA spook is
gone (Bruce Willis got a bit greedy or something so Stallone gave him the boot)
and enter Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford).
The man still looks good for a guy in his 70s. Turns out Stallone and Ford both wanna get
‘Payback’ (did you get that movie reference) on our villain, Mel Gibson.
There’s a fair amount of new
talent this time round and it’s kinda cool watching the kids trying to do
things all smart, fancy and modern but in the end Stallone and team still have
to go all out guns blazing to take down the bad guys.
As you can probably tell,
there isn’t really much in terms of story but it more than does the job.
As always, the action is
served with a healthy dose of tongue in cheek humour. Lundgren, Banderas and Snipes all have some
pretty funny moments (catch the real life Snipes reference early on in the
movie) and it’s pretty cool that Frasier (Kelsey Grammer) has managed to get
himself into two big summer movies this year (he was the bad guy in
Transformers: Age of Extinction).
There was a lot of negative
talk online when it was announced that the movie was going to be a PG-13 rating
and not R rated. Who gives a damn?? It just means that there’s less fake blood
visible. The action is still pretty
crazy and the ending in particular is more badass than both previous
Expendables movies.
To be honest, brainless as it
is, I had a really good time watching this.
Good action, good humour and the characters are really growing on
me. Just wish they could’ve somehow got
Van Damme back in this (long lost twin wishing to make amends for his evil dead
brothers actions – just a suggestion for Stallone if he’s reading this).
If you like Expendables
movies then you’ll like this. If you
didn’t like the last 2 then you won’t like this – simple!
A solid action movie which is
likely to hit the spot for anyone in need of a quick action fix.
We’re already looking forward
to Expendables 4!!!
Bring it on!
Rating 4 out of 5
